Problem-Solving Positioning

Hips

Ideal Position: resting all the way back in the seat, with weight on both sides of the bottom

Strategy: Use a seatbelt, scarf, towel, or strap across the hips, positioned down and back and secured low.

Trunk

Ideal Position: symmetrical and at midline

Strategy: Use small pillows or towels rolled along both sides of the trunk.

Shoulders

Ideal Position: symmetrical and at rest

Strategy: Adjust chair, table, or tray to allow child to rest arms and elbows.

Head

Ideal Position: as straight and upright as possible

Strategy: Use shaped pillows, rolled towels, or special headrests.

Knees

Ideal Position: bent comfortably over the edge of the chair with thighs supported

Strategy: If seat is too deep, add a cushion behind the child to bring the child forward.

Feet

Ideal Position: flat on a surface while sitting

Strategy: Use a footrest, stool, or box if the child’s feet cannot reach the floor or footrest.
